As another ancient wonder of the world, I am doing the hanging gardens of Babylon. They are one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. They are be the second oldest of the ancient wonders. These are gardens that were built on high platforms of different levels. They were thought to be about 75 feet tall. A staircase made of marble connected the terraces. The terraces were 120 meters square. The first platform was eight meters tall and had big trees on it. The second platform was thirteen meters tall and had cypress and fruit trees. The last two taller terraces had smaller flowers like roses, tulips, and lilies. According to legend, King Nebuchadnezzar the second built these gardens for his wife to remind her of the plants and mountains from where she was born.

For a futuristic wonder, I am doing the endless skyscraper, or endless city, in London. It isn't an actually building, but it is a design for a building. It is a 300 meter tall building. It won a skyscraper contest that a company called SURE Architecture made, where people were challenged to build a new skyscraper design. This building has two ramps, that you can ride a car on, that go around the exterior of the building, instead of using the traditional way of stacking floors on top of each other. They are connected by bridges and walkways, so that it is easier to navigate in. The building is supported by six huge steel tubes. These tubes enclose the staircases and lifts that are used to get people, energy, waste, and water up and down the building. In it, there are spaces for shops, entertainment centers, offices, and apartments. It also would have places for parks and schools. It could accommodate residential communities and whole businesses. Because of this, it basically could become a city of its own, and you probably wouldn't have to leave it much, or at all, if you stayed there. The Vredefort Dome, or Vredefort Crater is a 300 kilometer (186.4 mile) wide crater from a meteorite, that hit there. It is in Vredefort, South Africa. It is the biggest impact from a crater that scientists have found on Earth. It is located in South Africa. Geologists have also estimated that the meteorite was almost twice as big as the one that struck 65 million years ago, killing the dinosaurs. Geologists have also estimated more things studying the crater. They think that it happened 2023 million years ago. At this time, they think, the only living thing was a type of algae. Also, to make a crater this big, they believe that the crater was 10 kilometers wide and traveled at 10 kilometers per second.
"Shooting stars" are actually small pieces of rock that are traveling really fast. They move so fast that when they enter the atmosphere, they start to burn. They burn from friction with the air. There are millions of small rocks in outer space. There are also large pieces of rocks that are so big that they don't burn or slow down, so they hit the atmosphere at a fast speed. The destruction from on hiring the Earth is massive. This is what happened at Vredefort millions of years ago. Scientists think that if it happened today it would kill almost all living things on Earth The lighthouse of Alexandria is, as the name suggests, a lighthouse in Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, who used to be the king of the ancient Greece kingdom. It started getting built in 290 B.C., which is interesting, because Alexander the Great died before that in 323 B.C. Actually, it is on the island of Pharos, which is in front of Alexandria. It is one of the ancient 7 wonders of the world, and was the one that stayed the third-longest. It was the idea of Ptolemy Soter’s, who was a ruler of Egypt. It didn't get finished until he was dead, which was when his son, Ptolemy Philadelphus, took rule. It ended around 280 B.C. It would have cost 3 million dollars in current times, but it cost 800 talents, which was the form of money at that time.
It had 3 floors, one was a square, another was an octagon, and the last one was circular. The whole thing was about 440 feet tall, which would be about 44 stories tall in modern times. When you were up in it, you could see ships from 100 miles away. Inside of it there was a pillar-like structure that went through the whole lighthouse vertically, and carried fuel to light a fire at the top of it. During the nighttime, this fire was used as a beacon. During the daytime, there was a mirror that reflected sunlight, and also served as a beacon. Some people think that the mirror would also burn enemy ships before they got to shore, but we are not positive that his is true. It was destroyed by three earthquakes, the first two damaging it, and the last one finally blew it to the ruins. The smoke could be seen from 100 miles away, and helped guide sailors that day, when the fire wasn’t there. Now, the city of Alexandria uses the symbol of the lighthouse on their flag, and also on their seal. It is important, because it was super tall, and was one of the first lighthouses. |
